a film called black

A Film Called Black is a genre-blending concept album that sonically scores the Black experience across time and space. Crafted by Cam Be and Neak, with contributions from a collective of Chicago-based musicians and features from acclaimed artists like Skyzoo, Rashid Hadee, Yaw, J. Ivy, and Johnny Burgos, the album is both a meditation and a celebration—rooted in soul, hip-hop, jazz, funk, gospel, and the cinematic textures of classic Black film.

Inspired by the lineage of artists like Marvin Gaye, Curtis Mayfield, OutKast, and Roy Ayers, the record weaves live instrumentation with sample-based production to explore themes of identity, resistance, spirituality, and love. Recorded and mixed in Chicago, it features a powerful ensemble of players—horns, strings, gospel choirs, poetic interludes—each track unfolding like a scene from a cinematic universe.

At its core, A Film Called Black is a love letter to Black creativity—past, present, and future.
